Chinese firms GCL Group and Jurong Group have signed a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) construction and toll processing contract with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines to build the second phase of the Calub LNG project in the Somali Regional State.
The agreement was finalized following discussions involving Minister of Mines Alemtsehay Pawlos, GCL Group Executive President Wang Dong, and China Jurong Group Chairman Lin Rongsheng, according to an official statement from GCL Group.
According to GCL Group, the expansion builds on its existing operations in the country, which included the installation of Ethiopia’s first skid-mounted LNG liquefaction unit and the start of commercial natural gas production.
Under the terms of the agreement, the contractors will construct gas processing units and related logistics infrastructure to support increased production output.
The second phase builds on Phase One of the Ogaden Basin project, which was inaugurated in October 2025. Designed to support domestic energy needs, the initial phase processes 200,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day for local industrial use.
