Ethiopia has decided to close its embassy in Asmara and ordered 10 Eritrean diplomats stationed in Addis Ababa to leave the country within 48 hours, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, October 1, 2026.

The Ministry said the decision to close the embassy was made in response to what it described as Eritrea’s “direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence” against Ethiopia.

It also declared the 10 diplomats persona non grata, alleging their involvement in activities that pose a direct threat to Ethiopia’s national security and breach the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
