The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) announced today that it has suspended Tigray Television, citing severe violations of broadcasting standards and national security concerns. The decision comes immediately in the wake of the September 20, 2026, announcement of a new alliance comprising seven anti-government militant groups—including Tigray’s TPLF, Fano, and OLA—seeking to overthrow the federal government.
The state media regulator stated that its recent media content monitoring and evaluation confirmed a continuous pattern of incendiary broadcasts by the regional media outlet. The EMA statement reads, “Tigray Television has repeatedly aired messages that incite conflict, encourage extremism, and directly jeopardize public safety and national interests.”
Following the cessation of hostilities achieved through the Pretoria Peace Agreement signed between the federal government and the TPLF, the EMA said it had engaged in extensive dialogue with the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray.
Alongside the suspension, the Authority issued a strict directive to all domestic media outlets: “Digital, broadcast, and print media are explicitly barred from using the regional television as an information source, as well as from rebroadcasting or echoing any content unlawfully disseminated by the station.”
