After meeting with stakeholders in Tigray Yesterday to assess the region’s humanitarian situation, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ozonnia Ojielo noted that the region is in the midst of a significant drought “with devastating consequences”.
According to him, 148 kebeles in Tigray alone “have not yet seen a drop of rain” this season, which he says is driving severe food insecurity not only in the region but also in other parts of the country.
Noting that ongoing political tension worsens the situation by preventing people from engaging in economic activities and accessing humanitarian assistance, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator called for a de-escalation of conflict.

“The message I have heard over, over, and over again is that the people of Tigray do not want war. They want political actors to find common ground to address the issues. This is also the desire of the UN. We want to be able to respond to the humanitarian needs that people have, to allow normal economic activities, and to focus on the future,” he noted.
