The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has lifted a long-standing restriction that required all export permits for goods destined for China to be processed exclusively through the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE).
In a public notice issued on May 26, the central bank announced that all licensed commercial banks are now authorized to issue export permits, manage documentary credits, and handle related banking transactions for the Chinese market.
The previous restriction had been established under a bilateral economic and financial cooperation framework between Ethiopia and China.
According to the NBE, the change takes effect immediately. The move aims to expand access to trade finance and streamline administrative procedures for exporters shipping to China.
