The European Commission proposed today to lift the restrictive Schengen visa measures imposed on Ethiopian nationals, formally transmitting the draft decision to the Council of the European Union.
The restrictions, enforced since June 2024, are being repealed following what the EU described as “substantial and sustained progress” by the Ethiopian government in addressing migration and repatriation cooperation.
Once the Council officially approves the proposal, the strict temporary measures will be dismantled, restoring standard EU Visa Code guidelines. The regular visa processing window will drop back to 15 days from the 45 calendar days required under the current sanctions. Additionally, eligible Ethiopian travelers will once again be able to secure multiple-entry visas.
