A jury in Chicago has ordered Boeing to pay USD 49.5 million in damages to the family of a victim killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash.
The compensation was awarded to the relatives of a 24-year-old American NGO worker, who was among the 157 people killed when the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa in March 2019.
The ruling marks one of the few cases linked to the disaster to reach a jury verdict. Most lawsuits filed by victims’ families against Boeing were previously settled out of court.
The Ethiopia crash came just five months after another Boeing 737 MAX aircraft crashed in Indonesia, killing 189 people. The two fatal accidents triggered a worldwide grounding of the aircraft model and intensified scrutiny over Boeing’s safety and certification practices.
