The Prime Minister’s Office announced today that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has extended the mandate of Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede as President of Tigray’s Interim Administration for another year.
The decision followed a meeting in Addis Ababa between Tadesse Werede and federal government officials, including Prime Minister Abiy, The Chief of General Staff, the Foreign Minister, and the former head of Tigray’s Interim Administration, among others. Yesterday, Tadesse presented his annual report, according to a brief statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The extension averted an imminent leadership vacuum in Tigray, where the mandate of the interim administration had been nearing expiry amid persistent political uncertainty and strained relations between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
