The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has announced that five electoral districts disputed between the Amhara and Tigray regional governments will hold elections only for federal representatives, in accordance with a decision issued by the House of Federation.
In a letter dated February 2, 2026, the House of Federation informed the Board that it had decided on the status of five disputed districts: Humera, Adiremetse, Korem Afla, Telemt, and Raya Alamata.
According to the decision, elections in these districts will be conducted directly for seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives. These elections will be administered separately and outside the jurisdiction of the Tigray Regional Government until the territorial dispute between the Amhara and Tigray regional states is resolved through constitutional procedures.

The House of Federation further stated that elections for the respective regional council seats in the disputed districts will be held at a later date, once the territorial claims are resolved through a constitutional determination.
The National Election Board of Ethiopia said it will implement the 7th General Election in accordance with the decision of the House of Federation while observing all relevant laws and electoral procedures.
Refusing the order of the House of Federation, the Interim Administration of Tigray and Tigray Democratic Solidarity (Simret) party have called for its “immediate reconsideration and reversal,” describing the decision as a “ dangerous path.”
