In a direct call to the international community, Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister Gedion Timothewos (PhD) called for debt relief and climate financing “grounded in equity and respect” during the opening of the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council today.

Addressing delegates in Addis Ababa, the minister emphasized that “no global platform can be considered credible or effective without Africa having its rightful role in shaping and influencing international decisions.” He pressed for fair global partnerships to address the continent’s economic challenges ahead of the 39th Summit of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

Additionally, Timothewos welcomed the restoration of constitutional order in Guinea and Gabon—which have rejoined the African Union—while expressing concern over continued unconstitutional changes of government elsewhere on the continent.
