Ethiopia and Russia have signed an agreement for the construction of a nuclear energy generation plant in Ethiopia during the Global Atomic Energy Summit being held in Moscow.
The Embassy of Russia in Ethiopia announced in a post on X that the Action Plan for the development of the NPP project in Ethiopia was signed by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos.
A top-level Ethiopian government delegation led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) is in Russia to attend the Global Atomic Energy Week (also referred to as the Global Atomic Forum) since September 25.
Earlier, PM Abiy met Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Among the wide range of issues discussed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Vladimir Putin, defense cooperation was included, according to information from the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
Abiy revealed Ethiopia’s intentions to build a civil nuclear power plant during the inauguration on September 9 of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), saying the nuclear development project would be comparable in scale to the USD 5 billion hydro dam.
