Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, announced in a social media post today that he has resigned from his position.
In his “message of appreciation and farewell” on his X page, Mamo stated that “the time has come” for him to leave government to “pursue other passions and tackle new challenges.”
Mamo, who has served as the 10th governor of the bank since January 2023, was previously the founding CEO of the country’s sovereign fund (Ethiopian Investment Holdings). He also worked as an economy advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).
However, his resignation has not yet been officially released by the NBE. A source at the Central Bank, who declined The Reporter Magazine’s request for information on the topic, hinted, saying, “You have to wait until an official statement is issued from us.”
He highlighted his role as the founding CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, where he oversaw the establishment of an institution designed to create generational wealth through global investment partnerships and disciplined portfolio management.
Reflecting on his tenure as Governor of the NBE, Mamo said he was “proud to have led the institution through the country’s most significant economic reforms in more than half a century.”
“I am incredibly proud of the work we did at the NBE. As Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, I led this venerable institution through the country’s most significant economic reforms in over 50 years,” he said in his statement.
Some sources indicated that Mamo will join the African Development Bank in an executive role.
