African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has urged AU member states to mobilize domestic resources to confront Africa’s growing challenges, amid declining global solidarity and a weakening multilateral system.
Speaking at the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council held in Addis Ababa, Youssouf stressed the need for self-reliance in funding the continent’s development priorities, particularly in peace and security. He warned that external financing is becoming increasingly unreliable, calling for a shift toward local solutions.
“Africa is facing complex challenges driven by both internal and external factors,” he said. “We must adapt and rely on our own domestic resources to move forward.” Youssouf pointed to

disruptions in global support affecting key areas such as health, food security, and trade, urging stronger collaboration among African nations.
He emphasized the importance of engaging the private sector and philanthropic organizations to close the widening financing gaps. “We must count on ourselves and build strong domestic financing mechanisms,” he stated.
Youssouf highlighted peace and security as urgent areas requiring immediate investment from within the continent. “Given the global polarization and uncertainty, African solidarity and coherent action are more important than ever,” he concluded.
