Over the past six months, 89 judges in Amhara region have resigned, citing “security concerns, threats, and low payment” as primary reasons. This mass resignation has led to the closure of 28 district court divisions.
In response to these challenges, the Amhara Regional State Supreme Court has enacted legislation granting legal immunity to judges. This measure aims to protect judicial independence and ensure that judges can perform their duties without undue pressure. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has welcomed this development, emphasizing that judicial independence is fundamental to building a democratic system and promoting human rights.
Despite these efforts, the region continues to face significant challenges in maintaining a stable and independent judiciary. The resignation of a substantial number of judges underscores the urgent need for reforms that address security concerns, improve compensation, and protect the rights of judicial officers.
