AliExpress, Alibaba’s global e-commerce platform, introduced Ethiopian Birr (ETB) payment options, which started as of Monday, February 24, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility for Ethiopian consumers by allowing transactions in the local currency, thereby reducing reliance on foreign exchange and simplifying the purchasing process.
This development is part of AliExpress’s broader strategy to expand localized payment options across Africa. The platform has previously integrated mobile payment systems like M-Pesa in Kenya and Opay and Verve bank cards in Nigeria. Alongside Ethiopia, new payment options are also being introduced in Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tanzania, South Africa, and Uganda.
In Ethiopia, AliExpress has established a significant presence by partnering with MKTY IT Services Plc, a local IT firm. This collaboration has led to the opening of the first AliExpress showroom in Africa, located in Addis Ababa, and the development of an operations warehouse to streamline logistics.
The introduction of ETB payment options is believed to boost online retail participation in Ethiopia, making it easier for consumers and businesses to engage in cross-border trade. By partnering with local telecom providers and financial institutions, AliExpress aims to create customized e-commerce solutions that align with Ethiopia’s growing digital economy.
