Former Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome’s (PhD) recent opinion piece on Al Jazeera has ignited significant controversy by accusing Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki of actively seeking to destabilize the Horn of Africa. In his February 17, 2025, article, Mulatu warned of the potential for renewed conflict in the region, attributing the threat to Eritrea’s alleged involvement in various regional disputes.
Mulatu’s assertions have been met with a strong rebuttal from Eritrean officials. Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information, labeled the accusations as “audacious” and intended to “conceal and rationalize a war-mongering agenda.” He emphasized that Eritrea has consistently upheld its commitment to peace and regional stability, asserting that Ethiopia’s internal crises should not be externalized or blamed on Eritrea.
The exchange highlights the ongoing tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, despite the 2018 peace agreement that formally ended two decades of hostility or no war, no peace situation.
