The faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) led by Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) has refused an order from the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) to hold a general assembly before the February 2025 deadline.
Last month, the Board issued a notice stating that despite various reminders, the TPLF had not shown any signs of preparing for the mandatory general congress, which has a deadline of February 10, 2025.
NEBE officials have instructed the party to organize a general assembly in accordance with the terms of its August 2024 reinstatement under ‘special circumstances,’ which mandates the assembly to be held within six months. The Board expects to be notified of the assembly date three weeks in advance, and the meeting must take place in the presence of NEBE-appointed observers, as stated in the notice.
However, in a statement issued on January 17, 2025, following three days of discussions on regional and national affairs, the TPLF central committee accused the Board of acting maliciously.
