After a 50-year hiatus, Ethiopia on January 11 relaunched its stock exchange, the Ethiopian Securities Exchange.
The operations of the Ethiopia Securities Exchange were disrupted in 1974 following the takeover by a communist military government.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the relaunch as an “historic milestone” for Ethiopia’s economic and financial landscape.
Initially listed on the ESX was just one company, Wegagen Bank. ESX is expecting 90 companies to eventually join the market over the next 10 years according to but ESX chief executive Tilahun Kassahun.
