Authorities are pushing for reforms to the Addis Ababa light rail, its highest-profile infrastructure project backed by Chinese loans, after the troubled network has struggled to deliver on promises to ease congestion.
Finance Minister Ahmed Shide hosted representatives from China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai to discuss revamping the 475 million dollars light rail system. More than three-quarters of the network’s trains are sometimes idled due to maintenance issues.
The main objective of the meeting is to undertake a review on Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit (AALRT) to investigate the problems in the project areas and make recommendations to make it efficient and effective in its operation, the Finance Ministry said.
