A tender for the procurement of close to 14,600 shipping containers for the state-owned Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) has drawn bids from 11 international suppliers.
The shipping giant is in the market for nearly 13,000 20-foot containers and an additional 1,600 40-foot units as its executives eye an expansion.
The sole multimodal shipping firm in the country handled approximately 45 percent of 8.25 million tons of cargo imported through ports in Djibouti in 2023/24. It operates a fleet of 10 bulk cargo ships, and is often forced to lease space on other liners to accommodate demand.
