The shield of Emperor Tewodros, looted during the 1868 Magdala War, has been returned to Ethiopia after 156 years. It was handed over to the Ethiopian Heritage Protection Authority following negotiations between the Royal Ethiopian Trust and UK auction house Anderson & Garland.
The shield was listed for auction in February 2024, but the sale was canceled after intervention by the Ethiopian government and talks with the Royal Ethiopian Trust.
The British forces defeated Emperor Tewodros at Magdala, looting numerous artifacts, including tablets, crosses, and ceremonial weapons. While some have been repatriated, many remain in the British Museum.
