Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, leader of Somaliland’s opposition Waddani Party, has won the presidency of the self-declared breakaway region of Somalia, defeating incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi. Abdullahi, also known as Irro, secured nearly 64% of the vote in fourth presidential election, according to the Somaliland National Electoral Commission (NEC). Bihi, who sought a second term after seven years in office, received around 35%.
The election was delayed twice since 2022 due to funding issues and other logistical challenges. Both candidates campaigned on promises to revive Somaliland’s economy and push for international recognition.
Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, maintains its own government, currency, and security forces, despite not being recognized by any country.
