A fire erupted on October 21 at the bustling Merkato market in Addis Ababa, destroying several businesses before being brought under control after several hours of intense firefighting. The blaze caused significant damage to the area.
Mayor Adanech Abiebie issued a statement explaining that the fire was difficult to extinguish due to the market’s limited accessibility for firefighting vehicles. As a result, a helicopter was deployed to assist in controlling the flames.
The Addis Ababa Fire and Emergency Authority stated that the fire was so severe that six firefighters were injured while trying to put out the blaze and rescue individuals in danger.
