Sahle-Work Zewde has stepped down as president of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia after completing her first term in office. Sahle-Work, who became the country’s first female president in October 2018, succeeded Mulatu Teshome in the role.
According to Ethiopia’s constitution, the president can serve up to two terms, with each term lasting six years.
Ethiopia’s parliament has approved Taye Atske-Selassie as her successor. Taye, who has served as Ethiopia’s foreign minister since February, assumed the largely symbolic position of president. In Ethiopia, executive authority remains primarily with the prime minister, making the presidency a ceremonial role.
