The leaders of Egypt and Somalia traveled to Asmara at the invitation of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, amid escalating regional tensions. On October 10, 2024, the three countries issued a joint statement pledging comprehensive support to Somalia’s security forces and reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty.
The leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between their countries and claimed to bolster Somalia’s state institutions and equip the Somali National Federal Army to address both internal and external challenges.
In their statement, the leaders praised Egypt for deploying troops to assist peacekeeping efforts in Somalia. Meanwhile, Somalia’s government declared that Ethiopia could not participate in the upcoming African Union peacekeeping mission, scheduled for 2025, unless it withdraws from its memorandum of understanding with Somaliland.
