Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education announced that just 5.4% of students passed this year’s Grade 12 national examination, marking a slight improvement from previous years. Out of 674,823 students who sat for the exam, only 36,000 managed to score the minimum 50% required to qualify for university admission.
The overwhelming majority, 94.6% or over 638,000 students, failed to meet the minimum score, reflecting the continued challenges in the country’s education system. Education Minister Birhanu Nega (PhD) noted that although the pass rate increased slightly from last year’s 3.2%, the overall results remain very low.
Addis Ababa stood out with the highest regional pass rate, where 21.4% of students passed, totaling 10,690 successful candidates. However, in contrast, 1,363 schools across the country had no students clearing the threshold.
