The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) will implement new electricity tariffs starting September 11, 2024. Under the revised plan, households using 50 kWh will see monthly bills increase from 24 birr to 41 birr by the end of the fiscal year 2024/25, eventually reaching 92 birr by 2027/28.
The tariffs are expected to rise gradually by an average of 10% per quarter, resulting in a threefold increase over four years. To ease the burden on low-income households, the EEU plans to subsidize up to 75% of the cost for customers consuming less than 200 kWh.
This increase is part of broader energy sector reforms, addressing infrastructure and operational costs. The adjustments align with the Ethiopian government’s economic reform agenda, guided by recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

Ethiotelecom also announced a plan to raise tariffs on select products and services in response to the government’s macroeconomic policy reforms. CEO Frehiwot Tamiru said that price adjustments would be moderate and based on customers’ ability to pay, with no across-the-board hikes expected. The telecom company aims to keep services affordable while adapting to changing economic conditions, she said.
