Ethiopian Airlines announced it has suspended all flights to and from Asmara, Eritrea, effective September 3, 2024. The decision comes in response to what the airline described as “challenging operating conditions” beyond its control.
This move follows a July 2024 statement from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority, which indicated that Ethiopian Airlines would no longer be permitted to operate in the country by the end of September.
The Eritrean authorities had previously accused the airline of “malicious trading practices” and cited numerous grievances. Despite ongoing discussions, Ethiopian Airlines was unable to resolve the issues. According to CEO Mesfin Tasew, Eritrea had frozen the airline’s bank account in Asmara, further complicating operations.
