Hanna Arayaselassie, head of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), has expressed concerns about the recent ban on importing fuel-powered vehicles into Ethiopia. In a letter to Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime, Hanna sought clarification and addressed potential disruptions caused by the new policy.
The ban affects vehicles such as trucks, tractors, and field vehicles, which are essential for various sectors including agriculture and logistics. Many of these vehicles are currently stranded at ports in Djibouti. Hanna highlighted that the lack of clear policy has confused both domestic and international investors.
The letter points out that the ban, aimed at reducing urban pollution and promoting electric vehicles, lacks clear legislation and enforcement. It also stresses that many investment projects are located outside major cities where electric vehicle infrastructure is inadequate. The commission requested the government to allow imports of non-electric vehicles for essential services and investment activities.
