Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has met with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s armed forces chief, in Port Sudan. This is the first visit by a foreign leader to al-Burhan since the conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began.

The conflict, which started in April 2023, has involved fighting between forces loyal to al-Burhan and the RSF, led by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti). Abiy Ahmed, who previously hosted Hemedti in Addis Ababa, framed this visit as part of efforts to restore stability to Sudan after nearly 15 months of war.

While the RSF controls much of the capital, Khartoum, and western Sudan, the army holds the eastern and northern regions, including Port Sudan.
