Teshome Toga (Amb.), Ethiopia’s inaugural Commissioner for Rehabilitation, has stepped down after leading a three-year disarmament and rehabilitation initiative for 14 months.
His resignation, effective as of March 12, 2024, was attributed to “personal reasons,” according to a statement from the Commission.
Temesgen Tilahun, formerly the deputy at the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) and a foreign policy advisor to the Prime Minister, has assumed Teshome’s position. Concurrently, Tesfalem Yehdego has replaced Atenkut Mezgebe (PhD) as Deputy Commissioner.

A diplomat and politician, Teshome previously served as Speaker of Parliament and led various diplomatic missions. He was appointed head of the Rehabilitation Commission in January 2023 following the signing of the Pretoria Agreement.
The Commission’s primary objective is to reintegrate hundreds of thousands of former combatants into civilian life by 2026.
