Berhanu Nega, Minister of Education, in his interview with the state affiliated EBC, while visiting grade 12 students national exam taking students.
Only 3.3 percent of the 896,520 Grade 12 students who sat for the national school leaving examination for the 2021-22 academic year managed to score the required 50 percent and above to pursue their university education.
“I have seen private schools learnt from this and improve the quality of education at their premise,” the minister said.
The minister’s comments come a year after dismal results that have raised concerns about the standard of education in both private and public schools. Critics say the poor performance highlights wider issues of teacher quality, infrastructure and deteriorating quality of education that need to be addressed.
