Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have agreed to
commence urgent negotiations to finalize an agreement among Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan
regarding the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
According to a statement released on July 13, 2023, both leaders are committed to making
necessary efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement within a four-month timeframe.
Tensions have escalated between Egypt and Ethiopia, the two largest neighbors of Sudan, in recent
years due to the construction of the massive hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile, situated near the
Sudanese border.
In an effort to safeguard the interests of Sudan, Prime Minister Abiy also confirmed that the fourth
round of dam filling would continue until September.
